Treating Our Dog’s Hot Spot | Silver Honey™ Hot Spot & Wound Care Review

Without a doubt, hot spots are painful, unsightly, and just plain gross on dogs. If you didn’t know, a hot spot is an inflamed or infected lesion on your dog’s skin that will appear when a skin irritation or small wound is moist. Hot spots are generally painful or your dog and if not addressed, bacteria can quickly spread.

We never had to worry about hot spots with our dog Navy. Frankly, she never got one. The first time Duke got a hot spot we really didn’t know what to think. We’ve seen hot spots before on our friends’ dogs but we had never seen one on either of our pups before.

I felt horrible. I could see Duke uncomfortable but really didn’t know what to do to help him. He had a small hot spot on the top of his paw. He would try to gnaw at it and lick it. He was clearly irritated.

We were introduced to a product that could help his little hot spot called Silver Honey™. This new product line was created to be tough on bacteria but gentle on skin when helping repair hot spots and wounds. This product comes in two easy to use application methods: a spray gel, and an ointment. The Spray gel is great for covering large areas, whereas the ointment works best for long term scabbing. Duke’s little hot spot has definitely scabbed over so we opted to try the ointment.

WHAT’S IT MADE OF?

Like many pet parents, I am pretty picky with what I give to my dogs. Silver Honey™Hot Spot and Wound care combines the natural power of Manuka honey and MicroSilver™ BG. Manuka honey is gathered from the pollen of the Manuka tree found in New Zealand. It is distilled and condensed into an ultrapotent, medical-grade form, giving it a high antibacterial activity needed for rapid healing. Oh, and it helps keep wounds hydrated and healthy!

The MicroSilver BG is made up of pure medical-grade silver particles. This ingredient provides long-lasting broad spectrum antimicrobial coverage. It stays on the surface of skin instead of being absorbed into the body. This protects from unwanted germs and boosts the skin’s natural defenses. For more information on the ingredients, visit Silver Honey’s website.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The product comes in a super sleek and clean looking packaging. The ointment was actually thicker than I expected it to be. I had thought it would be a more liquid type consistency but when squeezed it was cooling and had a thicker, more tacky feel. Also, the ointment itself doesn’t really have a smell, or at least not one that I could notice.

When applying the ointment to Duke’s hot spot, I was instructed to gently cleanse and dry the affected area. I applied the product liberally, making sure to apply beyond the wound edges.

We applied this daily until the hot spot was healed.

FINAL THOUGHTS

It really worked! And even better, it worked fast! I think the most frightening part of finding Duke’s little hot spot is realizing that he had been dealing with this uncomfortable little spot and pain for some time. The fact that in less than 10 days this helped his hot spot clear up makes me feel so much better.

A little goes a long way with this product. We really did not have to put a lot on Duke’s hot spot. We placed a little dab directly on his spot in the morning and worked wonders. We read a review online that the bitter taste of the product didn’t seem to work for one user’s dog. The taste of the ointment deterred Duke from wanting to bite or lick his hot spot. We definitely think this is what helped him heal so quickly.

Would we recommend this product? Absolutely! In fact, I believe everyone should have a tube or bottle of Silver Honey™Hot Spot and Wound Care in their dog’s first aid kit.

One of the reasons why Manuka honey is such a great sweetener is because of its antibacterial properties. Antibacterial properties are usually found in antibacterial foods. For instance, yogurt is a very good source of antibacterial properties. These antibacterial properties are what make Manuka honey so great as a sweetener.
