Red, White, & Blue Patriotic Popsicles (Human + Dog-Friendly)
It’s that time again! Let’s break out all things red, white, and blue and celebrate the Fourth of July. I love the Fourth of July. Not only is it a day to celebrate our freedom and honor those who have served our country, it is a day to enjoy great food, the sunshine, and a long weekend filled with festivities, family and friends. The past two years we’ve been lucky enough to celebrate Independence Day at the beach. Zach and I have a trip planned to New York City with the dogs in two weeks so we decided to not travel for the weekend of the Fourth. Even though we don’t plan on traveling, I still wanted to bring a little red, white, and blue home, so I whipped up these patriotic popsicles to enjoy with the dogs.
Zach has really been on a popsicle kick after visiting the Pop Parlour in Orlando, so I picked up these popsicle molds from Amazon so we could make our own this summer. I feel like a broken record when I say this, but I love easy recipes. These dog-friendly patriotic popsicles, “pupsicles,” are so easy, they only require three ingredients: strawberries, blueberries, and coconut milk.
These three ingredients are safe and healthy for dogs in small quantities. However, be sure to consult your vet before feeding your dog anything new.
The Blue Section
For the blue section of the popsicle I pureed about a cup of fresh blueberries. We ended up only using half the pureed mixture. After pureeing the blueberries, pour about 2 tbsp into each of your molds. Set the pop molds in the freezer for about 20 minutes. You want the layers to harden a bit before adding the next layer.
The Red Section
I used pureed strawberries to make the red section of our red, white, and blue popsicles, but you could also use watermelon or cranberries. Whichever you choose to use, add about 2 tbsp of your red mixture to the pop molds and set in the freezer again for about 20 minutes.
The White Section
For the white section of our pops, I chose to use unsweetened, non-flavored coconut milk. You could also use unsweetened Greek yogurt as well. Looking back, yogurt would have been easier since some of the coconut milk spread into our red strawberry layer when we poured the milk in the mold.
The Results: Dog and Mom Approved!
Voila! After setting our pop molds in the freezer for a few hours we were left with three delicious looking red, white, and blue striped pops. Did they get the Navy seal of approval? They did … kinda. Navy is not the biggest fan of blueberries and I am a bad mom and forgot this. She did however love the red strawberry stripe and white coconut milk stripe. Of course Duke liked everything!
Because we wanted to make something to enjoy with the dogs, we didn’t add any sweeteners to the pops. As the pops melted you could taste more of the natural sweetness of the strawberries and blueberries, but at first lick, you won’t really taste the fruit flavors.
When I first decided to make this recipe, I saw similar recipes on Pinterest with multiple red and white stripes. Originally, I planned to make the pops with more stripes, but as I added each layer, I realized how long and tedious the process would take, so I only included the three. You can easily add more layers to your pops, but I recommend allowing more time for each layer to harden and include a little space at the top of your mold to account for expansion.
I can’t wait to come up with some more fun popsicle concoctions to share with the dogs this summer. What should we make next?
Have a safe and happy Fourth everyone! If you tried this recipe out, let us know! For more easy dog-friendly recipes click here.
