Hi friends! Do you live in the Washington, DC area and are you looking for a fun day trip to plan with your dog? Due to the ongoing global pandemic, we’ve chosen not to travel this year; however, we still want to get away. And we LOVE traveling with our dogs. We decided to start this series on our blog, where we share our dog-friendly day trips in the Washington, DC area.
The first location we are highlighting in our series is no other than Delaplane, Virginia. We are a little biased; we love Virginia. Delaplane is located in northern Fauquier County, Virginia, about 50 miles west of Washington, DC. If you have a spare weekend this fall, you should make the trip!
Dog-Friendly Activities in Delaplane, Virginia
From wineries to breweries, hikes and farms, Delaplane has several activities where your dog can tag along.
Sky Meadows State Park
11012 Edmonds Ln, Delaplane, Virginia 20144
This state park is on the eastern side of the Blue Ridge mountains just off route 50. It is a great place to pack a picnic and enjoy lunch in the picnic area before starting down one of the loop trails. The park has 24 miles of trails ranging in difficulty levels, making it perfect for families with children and dogs!
Hollin Farms
1524 Snowden Road, Delaplane, Virginia
Hollin Farms offers a variety of pick-your-own fruits and vegetables. They are open from late May through October. The farm is right next to Sky Meadows State Park. Though we haven’t visited Hollin Farm yet this year, two years ago, we scoured the internet to find a dog-friendly farm in northern Virginia where we could take Navy apple picking. We discovered Hollin Farms in Delaplane and Mackintosh Fruit Farm in Berryville.

Barrel Oak Winery and Farm Taphouse
3623 Grove Ln, Delaplane, Virginia 20144
Barrel Oak Winery is among our favorite dog-friendly wineries in northern Virginia. Dogs tout the bottles of their wines, paw prints scattered across the menus, and even a dog on staff — there is no questioning that this winery is dog friendly. Well behaved dogs on leash are welcome inside and outside this winery. We recommend trying the BowHaus White or the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Blue Valley Vineyard
5535 Blue Valley Way, Delaplane, Virginia 20144
Blue Valley Vineyard is gorgeous and dog friendly. Fun fact: we were strongly considering having our wedding reception here!

Three Fox Vineyards
10100 Three Fox Ln, Delaplane, Virginia 20144
Three Fox Fox Vineyards is a great location surrounded by beautiful sights. TFV is family and dog AND cat friendly. They ask that if you have any concern about your dog around other dogs or people, please keep your pet leashed. The tasting room has water dishes and dog treats for canine visitors!

Dog-Friendly Lodging in Delaplane, Virginia
There are so many things to do in Delaplane and the close surrounding area. Delaplane is perfect for a day trip, but if you take advantage of the many wineries, breweries, farms and hikes, you can always spend the night in an adorable bed and breakfast, resort or Airbnb.
There are not too many lodging options in Delaplane itself; however, Delaplane is just a few miles away from Middleburg, Virginia and other towns with more pet-friendly lodging options.
If you’re looking to spend the night, your best bet is to find dog-friendly Airbnbs in the Delaplane, Middleburg, or Front Royal, Virginia areas. If you are looking to splurge, take a look at the Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg, Virginia.
The Salamander Resort & Spa is just a few miles away from Delaplane, Virginia. Salamander Resort & Spa rolls out the red carpet for dogs. They include many amenities for furry friends, including pet beds, organic treats, a special toy and waste bags.
Though we made our trips this year to Delaplane, Virginia, in the fall, it is gorgeous and fun during any season. Thanks for reading and happy adventuring!
